Police arrested 27 drivers for suspected drunken driving between Aug. 6 and Sunday; five were involved in traffic accidents and three were younger than 21.
Police have made 846 suspected DUI arrests this year compared with 878 during the same period in 2011, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
Kona and Hilo officers arrested 12 motorists in each district while Puna officers arrested three motorists.
There have been 887 major accidents this year compared with 836 during the same period last year.
To date, there have been 24 traffic fatalities on Big Island public roadways, compared with 15 fatalities during the same period in 2011, according to police. To date, according to police, 12 of those fatalities were related to drugs, alcohol or a combination of both.
