The Living Arts Gallery’s featured artist for August is Mary Sky Schoolcraft. Her show of 20 paintings, on display throughout the month, captures the character of rural Hawaii.
Schoolcraft paints the timeless scenes of Kohala, from the mountains to the sea, from plantation era cottages to lush tropical vegetation, from sky to rugged coastline. Schoolcraft’s recent paintings bring a fresh energy to her favorite subject matter, the magic of rural Hawaii.
These elements all come together in her flowing landscapes, in a style sometimes called “magical realism.” Schoolcraft’s plein aire oil paintings reflect the vibrant saturated colors of Hawaii and treasure the distinctive roof lines, architectural details and pastoral qualities still lingering from the plantation past.
Her latest painting is a portrait of a Hawaiian woman holding a bowl of light in front of Kohala’s most famous area, Polulu.
“This is a conscious reference to the Hawaiian teaching story that we all enter the world with our own bowl of light and whenever we are angry or have a negative thought or action, we add a stone to our bowl of light,” Schoolcraft said. “We can come back into pono or harmony by emptying ourselves of these thoughts.”
An artist’s reception is planned from 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 25, with refreshments and a chance to meet the artist.
