Disaster response groups to meet Tuesday
The East Hawaii Chapter of Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster is having a quarterly general meeting at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Civil Defense office located at 920 Ululani St. in Hilo.
VOAD is the forum where organizations share knowledge and resources throughout the disaster cycle — preparation, response and recovery — to help disaster survivors and their communities. Members form a coalition of nonprofit organizations that respond to disasters as part of their overall mission. All interested organizations are welcome to attend and become members.

Underwater photogs to meet Wednesday
The Kona Underwater Photographic Society meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the West Hawaii Community Center. Parking is free and the doors to the meeting room will open at 6:30 for set-up.
This month’s meeting features a single-subject local photo of raccoon butterflies for sharing and learning. Photographers will discuss the conditions, equipment used and any problems to “get the shot.”
Attendees may enter up to two photos or videos — or one of each — for the second event of the evening. Any subject and any amount of Photoshop will be allowed for the “free-for-all” competition. The photos or videos must have been taken within the last 18 months.

Seniors touring candy company Wednesday
The Kailua-Kona Seniors group will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hale Halawai prior to its tour of the Kailua Candy Co.
Those going on the tour are required to wear a head covering and closed shoes, sandals are not permitted. Tank tops are also not allowed to be worn on the tour.
Chocolate samples will be available.

Possibility of pre-Cook voyages explored
Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park is hosting a program at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the park’s amphitheater.
Gordon Joyce, a former chief of interpretation who served in law enforcement and resource management divisions at the park, will present “In Search of First Contact: An Examination of Possible Pre-Cook European Voyages to Hawaii.”
