The Volcano Art Center will be offering the following classes and events during September:
c “Drawing Basics,” taught by Kathy Long, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 1. Long, an internationally known Waimea artist, will share techniques to bring depth and life to students’ drawings. The cost is $60; $54 for center members, which includes supplies and a print from the artist. Call 967-8222 to register.
c “Dancing on the Earth” meets with Shizuno Nasu from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 1. The class is open to all levels, including beginners and nondancers. Each class begins with a morning warm-up and the afternoon focuses on expressive dance movements based on Hara Tanden chi energy, which is an Asian technique that increases concentration and enlightens the spirit through relaxation. c “LOL: Ladies Out Loud, An Evening of Comedy” is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 1. Local women will poke fun at island life from puns to politics, hormones and hilarity run wild. Tickets are $10. c Niaulani Nature Walk, a free guided rain forest tour, is scheduled at 9:30 a.m. Mondays and 11 a.m. Saturdays. The one-hour walk travels through a lush portion of an old-growth Hawaiian rain forest on an easy trail on the Niaulani Campus, 19-4074 Old Volcano Road in Volcano Village. Donations are welcome. c A free hands-on demonstration lesson is given in a cultural craft that will vary from week to week from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Friday at the VAC Gallery porch in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. c Halau Hula Ka Makani Hali Ala O Puna, under the direction of kumu hula Ehulani Stephany, performs from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sept. 15. The outdoor presentation takes place rain or shine at the hula platform located near the gallery. The audience is encouraged to bring sitting mat and sun/rain gear. On the same day, there are hands-on cultural demonstrations from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the gallery porch. All events are free but donations are welcome; park entrance fees apply.
c Tom Peek teaches “Writing Family History and Personal Memoir” from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 22 at the center’s Niaulani Campus. Participants will learn techniques to overcome barriers that cause writer’s block, self-censorship or lack of depth in personal topics. Topics include writing with emotional power, bringing back the past with photographs and memorabilia and finding truths (and lies) and old myths. No previous writing experience is needed.
