Two men were injured Monday evening when a semitrailer collided with a compact sedan on Kawaihae Road in South Kohala.
Responding to the 5:46 p.m. report, Waimea and South Kohala firefighters and rescue personnel determined a semitrailer driven by a 60-year-old man and a compact sedan driven by a 22-year-old man had apparently collided near mile marker 61, in the vicinity of Ouli Street on Kawaihae Road, according to the department, which had no further information on the vehicles’ direction of travel.
The 22-year-old, who had to be extricated from his vehicle, suffered multiple traumatic injuries and was taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital, according to the department. The 60-year-old was also transported to the hospital.
Kawaihae Road was closed for about an hour while crews remained on the scene. Police in Waimea and the department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit had no further information available as of Tuesday afternoon.
