Yanks’ Nova on DL with rotator cuff inflammation
NEW YORK — The New York Yankees have put pitcher Ivan Nova on the 15-disabled list because of inflammation in his right rotator cuff.
The Yankees made the move Thursday after an MRI revealed the problem. The team says treatment will consist of medicine and rest, and that the right-hander will not play catch for five days.
Nova is 11-7 with a 4.92 ERA. He has struggled lately and took the loss Tuesday night against the Chicago White Sox.
Earlier this week, manager Joe Girardi said David Phelps would be the primary candidate to fill in if Nova had to miss a start.
The Yankees were off Thursday. They begin a series Friday night in Cleveland, and ace CC Sabathia is set to come off the disabled list to start.
Pa. Company to propose arena for Virginia Beach
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A Philadelphia-based sports and entertainment company will present plans for a new arena to the Virginia Beach City Council on Tuesday in a possible first step toward bringing a professional sports franchise to the city.
“At our presentation on Tuesday we will elaborate our collective plans for a new arena,” Comcast-Spectacor spokesman Ike Richman said in a statement. “Despite preliminary reports, no specific professional sports team from any league has been identified as the potential tenant for this building.”
Richman declined to comment further, deferring all questions to the presentation.
Virginia Beach Mayor Will Sessoms told The Virginian-Pilot that Comcast-Spectacor has guaranteed that if an arena deal goes through, the company would bring a professional sports team to town. The company owns the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League.
Sessoms did not return a call seeking comment. A city spokeswoman refused to comment until after Tuesday’s 3 p.m. presentation.
Mathieu’s father: Tyrann will sit out season
Tyrann Mathieu’s father says the former LSU star will not play football this season.
Tyrone Mathieu tells ESPN his son is focused on working out his personal problems with former NBA coach and player John Lucas at the Right Step recovery center in Houston. Lucas battled drug and alcohol problems during his career and now counsels others.
Tyrone Mathieu told ESPN on Thursday that “Tyrann is working on discipline, maturity and character. He’s making life adjustments.”
Tyrann Mathieu, a Heisman Trophy finalist last season, was kicked off the team at LSU two weeks ago, reportedly for failed drug tests, and considered transferring.
Yohan Blake runs 9.69 in 100 meters at Lausanne
LAUSANNE, Switzerland — Yohan Blake matched the fastest 100-meter time run by anyone other than Usain Bolt, finishing in 9.69 seconds Thursday to win the Athletissima Diamond League meet.
Running into a slight headwind, Blake’s 9.69 tied Bolt and Tyson Gay for the third-best time ever.
The mark trails only Bolt, who holds the two fastest times — his world record of 9.58 and the 9.63 he ran earlier this month to win gold at the London Olympics. Bolt was the first to run 9.69; he set the world record with that time at the Beijing Olympics.
Blake took .06 seconds off his personal best, which he ran while finishing second to Bolt in London.
NHL collective bargaining session brief in Toronto
TORONTO — NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman says the only way to make progress in ongoing labor talks is to solve the “fundamental economic issues.”
Bettman says the two sides remain far apart on those key financial elements after the bargaining session Thursday lasted less than 2 hours between the league and the NHL Players’ Association.
The union expanded on its proposal for rules governing player contracts.
Bettman says a small group session will be held Tuesday when he and deputy commissioner Bill Daly will sit down with players’ association executive director Donald Fehr and his brother Steve Fehr, the union’s No. 2 man.
The four executives also met Wednesday to discuss a way to move forward in the talks.
Indians owner not planning immediate change
CLEVELAND — Indians owner Paul Dolan says manager Manny Acta’s job is safe for now, and that he’s not planning any overhaul of the team’s front office despite Cleveland’s stunning losing skid.
Perplexed as anyone by the Indians losing 21 of 25 games, Dolan said Thursday night that he has no immediate plans to dismiss Acta, who’s in his third season and under contract for one more year. Dolan, appearing at a charity bowling event hosted by Acta, said he, president Mark Shapiro and general manager Chris Antonetti “have a lot of work to do, but their jobs aren’t at stake in this.”
