Self-defense classes offered Thursdays
Zach Nye leads free self-defense classes for youth and adults Thursdays at Rissho Kosei Kai on Palani Road in Kailua-Kona.
Lessons in Goju-Ryu Karate-Do, a performing art that reinforces positive values and instills techniques and applications that can be used in self-defense, are offered to youth, ages 7 through 12, from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. for those 13 and older.
Nye has more than 20 years experience and is an official affiliate school of Kuyukai Japan, an association of the Japan Karate-Do Federation.

The Kohala Ditch Foundation elects
new board
The Kohala Ditch Foundation has elected Lauren Rainier and Cheri Gallo to its board of directors.
Rainier was formerly director of IMG International and is the founder and executive director of the Sunday’s Child Foundation, a nonprofit that provides educational programs to at-risk keiki on Hawaii Island.
Gallo was one of 15 members of the Kohala Ditch Restoration Steering Committee that morphed into the Kohala Ditch Foundation. The committee was instrumental in raising $5 million to restore the ditch after the October 2006 Kiholo earthquakes. It played a key role in keeping water flowing through the century-old ditch, which in bygone days served as a lifeline for Kohala Sugar Co.
The foundation also announced Mike Luce stepped down as president and was replaced by Bob Lindsey. Luce will continue as a director in an advisory capacity. Kim Takata, who served as charter secretary, is transitioning for personal reasons. Scott May remains treasurer. Ed Texeira is also a board member.

Museums invite public
to free admission events
Hawaii Island museums are Celebrating Museums Month in September.
During the month, each participating institution will offer free admission to members of other participating institutions when a current museum membership card is shown.
In addition to the waived entrance fees, many of the organizations are also offering discounts in their gift shops and other benefits.
