Daughter of Hawaii, Calabash Cousin to meet
The Daughters of Hawaii and Calabash Cousins meet at 1 p.m. Thursday on the Hulihee Palace lawn.
Historian Boyd Bond will speak about the Hawaiian Kingdom and monarchs of the 19th century.
There will be music and refreshments.

Library boosters plan book sale
The Friends of the Libraries, Kona will hold a book sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday on the Kailua-Kona Public Library lanai. Proceeds from sales help support the needs of the libraries, with funding that includes educational and entertainment programs, reading programs, visiting authors and new book purchases.

Annual Sayre auction goes online Saturday
The Daniel R. Sayre Foundation is taking its fundraiser online. Instead of the usual gala dinner and silent auction, the community is asked to support the Hawaii County Fire Department by visiting the foundation’s website and bidding on a variety of items.
The online auction will run from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at danielsayrefoundation.com.
Supporters may also visit the website to pledge financial support for the purchase of equipment and training items needed by the island’s fire and rescue personnel.
Frank Sayre and Laura Mallery-Sayre, foundation founders, plan to resume the awards dinners and auctions in 2013.
Stakeholders, community meet Saturday
The Villages of Laiopua Board, Laiopua 2020 and regional stakeholders invites the homestead community and public to attend an informational meeting and family gathering to review and share in the regional development and planning initiatives that impact West Hawaii.
The gathering, which includes musical entertainment and refreshments, is slated from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Kaniohale Community Association Center, 74-5100 Haleolono St.
Laiopua 2020, government, community partners and stakeholders that play a central part of the regional planning and development of Kealakehe and Keahuolu ahupuaa will share information about their programs and seek input from area and homestead residents.

Makaeo cleanup Saturday
A community cleanup of the Makaeo Path at Old Kona Airport Park, led by Friends for Fitness, is planned from 7:30 until 10 a.m. Saturday.
Gloves, garden tools and light refreshments will be provided. Participants shoud meet at the path’s entrance by the water fountain.
Colleado graduates from recruit training
Navy Seaman Apprentice Dustin Colleado, son of Alice Thornton of Halaula and Rick Colleado of Hawi, was recently promoted to his current rank upon graduation from recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
Colleado received the early promotion for outstanding performance during all phases of the training cycle. Training included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.
Colleado is a 2010 graduate of Kohala High School.
Hirokane graduates basic combat training
Army National Guard Pfc. Fred V. Hirokane has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
During the nine weeks of training, Hirokane studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values and physical fitness and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches and field training exercises.
Hirokane is the son of Fred Hirokane of Kailua-Kona and Victoria Bernos of Honolulu.
He is a 2008 graduate of Kealakehe High School.
