This past Sunday, Frozen Pea Productions held the Wee and DLT Whirled Peas Biathlon at Kailua Pier. In this biathlon, athletes swam 3/4-mile in Kailua Bay and ran 3.9 miles along Alii Drive. Even with this being a longer-than-usual race, more than 100 competitors showed up Sunday.
Flying to first place overall was Luis De La Torre — DLT — who finished the biathlon in 42 minutes, 42 seconds. Karlyn Pipes-Neilsen, who finished in 46:25, was second overall and first for the women.
Korey Pulluaim, at 50:06, claimed second for the men and third overall. Jason Nixon at 50:34 and Michael DeCarli at 51:10 rounded out the top four men.
Second place for the women and eighth overall went to Jennifer Nottage, who crossed the finish at 53:23. Sharleen Gee (54:11) and Kristin Drost (54:18) rounded out the women’s top four.
In the Split Pea Division, Batman and Papa Pea finished in first place with a time of 42:39. The team of Karlyn Pipes-Neilsen and Doug Leopold (47:46) was second, while Superman and Orestes Barrios (48:00) placed third. Fourth place went to Robert Puaokalani/Kris Kiser (51:23).
In the Pea-wee Division, girl power claimed the title, with Audrey Nixon finishing in 14:35. Kai Griley was close behind at 14:42. Zac Shepard, who biked the run portion of the race, finished in third with a time of 14:50. Fourth place was a tie between Cameron and Joshua Stuart, who both finished in 14:57.
Finishing first in the Pea-wee Split Pea division was the team of Superman and Christian Gomez, who finished in 15:18. Right behind them, Kai and Susan Griley took second at 15:30. Third went to Batman and Mike Schiff at 19:32, and fourth went to Wonder Woman and Katie Payne at 27:04.
The 16th annual Race for Hope, a benefit for cancer research at the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, also took place Sunday. Competitors participated in 5- or 10-kilometer races.
Ziggy Bartholomy won the 5k with a time of 19:24. Kris Kiser was second (21:17), and third place went to Evan Kasberg, who completed the race in 21:34.
In the 10k, Paul Gregg took first with a finishing time of 38:18. Second place went to Alan Ryan, 39:10, and third went to Kenneth Stover, 40:08.

Coming up this weekend, the Queen K Tri Club is holding a cycling time trial. The time trail will start in front of the Veterans Cemetery and run a total of 22.2 miles. Registration starts 7 a.m. in front of the Veterans Cemetery, and the race begins at 8 a.m. This is a free community event.
The next Frozen Pea Productions race will take place Oct. 28. This race will include a 1/3-mile swim and a two-mile run. This is a free community event.
