High surf for Big Isle shores

A large south swell fueled by persistent winds has prompted a high surf advisory for the majority of Big Island’s shores through 6 p.m. Friday.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu forecast waves ranging from 6 feet to 8 feet for north-, south-, east- and west-facing shores with the exception of a portion of leeward Kohala. It anticipates surf will rise today and continue through Friday.

A high surf advisory means high surf could affect beaches in the advisory area, producing rip currents and localized beach erosion, according to the service.
