An awards reception is slated to recognize winners of the 28th annual Helen M. Cassidy Memorial Juried Art Show from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Firehouse Gallery in Waimea. Artwork from the competition will be displayed through Oct. 27.
Sixty-five entries were evaluated using five criteria: originality, balance, clarity, personal expression and execution of the medium. Aelbert Aehegma, a multimedia artist and educator judged the event. The public is invited to the reception; refreshments will be provided.
Big Island award winners include Irina Place, Amber Bonnici, Rani Denise Ulrich, Clytie Mead, Janine Aberg and Lynn Chapman.
The annual show is held every October and is named in honor of Helen M. Cassidy, who was instrumental in establishing the Waimea Arts Council. Cassidy was born in Hilo and began painting in the 1940s. In 1973, she moved from Oahu to Waimea and had shows at the Kona Arts Center and in Waimea where her work was recognized. Her efforts to establish and promote the Waimea Arts Council culminated in the Firehouse Gallery located in the old fire station at the main crossroads in Waimea.
