Hall of Fame catcher Fisk charged with DUI
NEW LENOX, Ill. — Hall of Fame catcher Carlton Fisk faces charges of driving under the influence and other misdemeanors after being found asleep in his pickup truck in a cornfield, police in suburban Chicago said Tuesday.
New Lenox Deputy Chief Robert Pawlisz said officers found Fisk, 64, behind the wheel late Monday with an open bottle of vodka on the truck’s floor.
“He was behind the wheel unconscious,” Pawlisz said.
Fisk was taken to a hospital for treatment and released from custody after posting bail, Pawlisz said. He has a court appearance scheduled for Nov. 29 in Will County.
Besides the DUI charge, he faces charges of lane-use violation and illegal transportation of alcohol.
Teen recalls at trial sex with Taylor
NEW YORK — A teenager who has accused former New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor of sexually assaulting her when she was 16 cried Tuesday as she described her encounter with the NFL Hall of Famer at the start of a civil trial.
Taylor pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of sexual misconduct and patronizing an underage prostitute for having sex with her in 2010 and is serving six years of probation. He leaned forward in his chair to watch the 19-year-old testify in U.S. District Court.
The teen, Cristina Fierro, who has since married, told a Manhattan jury hearing her lawsuit that she didn’t know who Taylor was when she found him naked on a bed in a hotel room in Montebello, just north of New York City. She said another man forced her to have sex with Taylor for $300. She said she brought the lawsuit to hold Taylor accountable.
The Brooklyn-born Fierro, who grew up in Pennsylvania and New York, began weeping as she graphically described her meeting with Taylor, who says he believed she was 19 at the time.
Idaho St. coach suspended for 1 game
POCATELLO, Idaho — Idaho State football coach Mike Kramer has been suspended for his team’s game at Montana on Saturday for violating the university’s conduct policy, athletic director Jeff Tingey said Tuesday.
The suspension came as Kramer was being investigated by the university and Pocatello police after wide receiver Derek Graves reported that Kramer shoved him to the ground during practice on Oct. 3.
Video obtained by ESPN shows Kramer running toward a player on the field, putting his face close to the player’s helmet and shoving him with two hands. The player falls to the turf.
Graves’ attorney, Don Jackson, said his client suffered neck and back spasms after the fall.
Harrington takes 2-shot lead at PGA
SOUTHAMPTON, Bermuda — Padraig Harrington, a playoff loser the two times he qualified for the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, gave himself a chance Tuesday to win as an alternate.
Harrington, who skipped the BMW Masters in Shanghai to play in Bermuda, made seven birdies for a 5-under 66 at Port Royal to take a two-shot lead over Masters champion Bubba Watson going into the final round of the 36-hole exhibition for the year’s four major champions.
Indurain believes in Armstrong’s innocence
MADRID — Five-time Tour de France champion Miguel Indurain says he believes in Lance Armstrong’s innocence after the American cyclist was stripped of his seven titles from the race.
The decision to strip Armstrong and ban him for life for doping leaves Indurain among four riders with a record five titles.
Querrey beats Lopez at Valencia Open
VALENCIA, Spain — Sam Querrey of the United States defeated Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 7-6 (4) Tuesday at the Valencia Open.
Top-seeded David Ferrer edged Olivier Rochus 7-5, 7-5 to reach the second round.
Nicolas Almagro stopped Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-3, 7-6 (4) to help his chances of reaching the ATP World Tour Finals. He’ll play Querrey next.
Davydenko edges Wawrinka at Swiss
BASEL, Switzerland — Nikolay Davydenko of Russia edged fourth-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (3), in the Swiss Indoors first round on Tuesday.
Sixth-seeded Mikhail Youzhny of Russia eased past Bernard Tomic of Australia, 6-0, 6-2.
Williams opens WTA Champs with win
ISTANBUL — With the year-end top ranking out of reach, Serena Williams will settle for the title at the WTA Championships.
In her first match since winning the U.S. Open in September, Williams defeated Angelique Kerber 6-4, 6-1 Tuesday to start round-robin play in the season-ending event featuring the top eight players in the world.
In White Group matches, Agnieszka Radwanska defeated titleholder Petra Kvitova 6-3, 6-2, and Maria Sharapova defeated Sara Errani 6-3, 6-2 in a repeat of the French Open final.
