Police arrested 26 drivers for suspected drunken driving between Nov. 26 and Sunday; five were involved in traffic accidents, and one was younger than 21.
Police have made 1,361 suspected DUI arrests this year compared with 1,340 during the same period in 2011, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
South Hilo officers arrested 17 motorists while Kona officers arrested six, according to police. South Kohala officers arrested two motorists and North Kohala officers one.
There have been 1,337 major accidents this year compared with 1,268 during the same period last year.
To date, there have been 37 traffic fatalities on Big Island public roadways, compared with 19 fatalities during the same period in 2011, according to police. Police say 12 of those fatalities were related to drugs, four to alcohol and 12 to a combination of alcohol and drugs.
