Kealakehe High School returned to a normal finals week schedule Tuesday, Principal Wil Murakami said.
The school closed on Friday after two days of fights. When doors reopened on Monday, the school increased police presence, as well as invited community volunteers in to talk with students about the situation, Murakami said. Monday was a modified schedule, with staggered lunch times.
Students provided feedback on the situation, mostly through comments about how they didn’t like the schedule and their inability to have lunch with their friends.
That’s a good response, Murakami said, because “students need to behave responsibly” for the regular schedule to remain in effect. “They got the message on that.”
The atmosphere on campus Monday was calm and normal, he added.
Classes run through Friday, which is the end of the first semester, before the school closes for winter break.
Murakami said he hopes in January to have a forum or conference with leaders from the Micronesian community to talk about the issues facing that community.
He said Kealakehe won’t be the only school invited to participate and work on ways to address those issues.
Racial and cultural tensions resulted in eight arrests and multiple fights breaking out on campus Wednesday and Thursday, school officials said.
