Preliminary hearings for two men accused of assaulting a guard, stealing a car and escaping from Hawaii Community Correctional Center have been delayed at the request of defense lawyers.
Hilo District Judge David Kuwahara rescheduled hearings for 35-year-old Jarvis Naoki Higa and 31-year-old Ryan James Jeffries-Hamar for Feb. 11 at 2 p.m.
Jeffries-Hamar and Higa are accused of attacking an unarmed corrections officer on Dec. 5, stealing his keys to the facility and then stealing the car of the facility’s law librarian to make their escape.
Higa was taken into custody Dec. 7 in Ocean View and Jeffries-Hamar was nabbed Dec. 13 in Hawaiian Beaches.
Both men have been moved to Halawa Correctional Facility on Oahu.
