“Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey in 3-D” is the topic of a Maunakea Skies program set for 7 p.m. Friday at Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaii. Doug Simons, CFHT executive director, will present the Legacy Survey data set in 3-D in the Imiloa planetarium.
Observations for the survey were made from 2003 to 2009. Three years were needed to calibrate the huge volume of high-quality and homogeneous data that revealed some 38 million objects, mostly very distant galaxies in various stages of evolution. The final release has now been integrated into the Imiloa Astronomy Center’s 3-D system.
Maunakea Skies is hosted by planetarium manager Shawn Laatsch. He will provide observational highlights of the current night sky over Hawaii.
