Ernest “Pops” Napua Kalehua Kai Sr., 79, of Hilo died Jan. 21, 2013, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Sept. 9, 1933, in Hana, Maui, he was retired from the Hawaii Army National Guard, a Marine Corps Korean War veteran and member of the Big Island National Guard Retirees Association.
Friends may call at 9 a.m. Jan. 31 at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo for a 10:30 a.m. service. Burial follows at noon at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. Family requests casual attire be worn.
He is survived by sons, Ernest (Melanie) Kai Jr. of Las Vegas, Robert Kai of Honolulu, Eric (Gayla Kobayashi) Kai of Hilo, Scott (Laurice) Weening of North Carolina, Kris Weening of Kona; daughters, Lissa (Jose) Morales of Hilo, Adrienne (Clyde Bowman) Weening of Kona, Erika Weening of Ohio; hanai sister, Mokihana (James Oliveira) Kai of Hana, Maui; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
