Events slated at Volcanoes park
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park offers the following programs and events (Programs are free, but park entrance fees may apply.):
Darryl Castillo will perform at 6:30 p.m. today in the Kilauea Visitor Center auditorium. His “Follow the Light” and “Son Crazy” both garnered Na Hoku Hanohano Award best inspirational album nominations. His CDs will be available for purchase.
A “virtual visit” to Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Kilauea Visitor Center auditorium. Toni Parras, communications manager for the monument, will deliver a presentation on the people, partnerships and promise of Papahanaumokuakea.
Kealakehe students plan fundraiser
Kealakehe High School students in Shirley McCoy’s English 10 and Design Tech I classes will hold a rummage and bake sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday across from Island Naturals on Kaiwi Street in Kailua-Kona.
Anyone with items to donate for the sale or who would like to order sweet bread for $7 or cinnamon bread for $8 may call McCoy at 938-1965.
Funds raised at the event will go toward sending students to the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math conference scheduled April 19 and 20 on Maui.
Nakamoto leads jewelry design workshop
Jewelry artist Sid Nakamoto will demonstrate a simple jewelry design during two sessions of a North Kohala Public Library adult and teen craft program set for 2 and 6 p.m. Monday.
Space is limited. Call the library at 889-6655 to register for either session. Materials will be provided for participants to create their own piece.
The program is free; materials are donated by the artist or the Friends of the Library.
Cancer support group meets at Teshima’s
A cancer support group meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Teshima’s Restaurant in Honalo. People newly diagnosed with cancer and cancer survivors are welcome, as well as interested caregivers and supportive family members.
The group meets to discuss cancer-related issues and lend support to one another.

Keiki story time in Keauhou is Feb. 27
Kona Stories at Keauhou Shopping Center will host a story time for children ages 3 to 6 at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 27. The event, presented with assistance from the American Association of University Women, Blue Journey Farms and Happy Honu Farms, features stories and crafts centered on the winter season. A $5 participation fee includes crafts and a snack. Space is limited to 30 children; reservations are recommended. Check in 10 minutes early at Kona Stories.

NARFE meeting
slated March 9
National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association Kailua-Kona chapter meets at 11 a.m. March 9 at the Kings’ Grille in Waikoloa. Member Gordon Joyce will present “In Search of First Contact,” an examination of a possible pre-Cook European voyage to Hawaii. He will present slides and findings from his studies with the University of Hawaii. Reservations are due no later than March 2. Lunch from the menu follows the meeting.
