During the week of April 29 through Sunday, Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for drunken driving. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were younger than 21.
So far this year, there have been 458 DUI arrests compared with 497 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.8 percent.
There have been 451 major accidents so far this year compared with 522 during the same period last year, a decrease of 13.6 percent.
So far this year, there were 12 traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with 12 during the same period last year.
To date, one fatality was attributed to drugs and two to a combination of drugs and alcohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
