The Kapilina Brick Garden is more than halfway to its initial goal of 700 bricks, said Ellen Cunningham, president of Hawaii Island Growing Our Own Teachers.
Thus far, fundraisers have sold 395 bricks for the garden, which will be located at the West Hawaii Civic Center. The sales have generated about $87,000 in donations, Cunningham said. Of that amount, 75 percent will go to Hawaii Island Growing Our Own Teachers, The Food Basket, The Island of Hawaii YMCA, FRIENDS of the Children’s Justice Center, the Hawaii Island Humane Society, West Hawaii Community Health Center or HOPE Services Hawaii. Participants choose which organization they want their donation to benefit. They can also divide the donation equally among all seven groups. The remaining 25 percent of the proceeds go toward the cost, engraving and shipping of the bricks, as well as garden construction.
The first brick order went out last month, and the first phase will be installed in July, Cunningham said. A second phase is scheduled for construction in November.
