More than 250 swimmers splished and splashed in the waters of Anaehoomalu Bay Saturday at the Cinco de Mayo Splash.
In celebration of Cinco de Mayo, Bike Works hosted the one-mile swim to raise money for local charities. The race is the first leg of the Big Island’s triple crown of swimming, with the Hapuna Roughwater Swim and the King’s Swim completing the series.
The water was warm, and the sun shone brightly, creating perfect swimming conditions. Many swimmers even saw some curious marine wildlife as they swam the course with turtles and eels, saying “good morning” to their new friends.
Leahi Camacho flew out of the water in first place, finishing in 22 minutes, 17 seconds. Camacho’s Kealakehe High School teammate, Madison Hauanio, was close behind to claim second at 22:36.
Jeff Maki placed third overall and first for the men at 22:41.
Madeline Foo rounded out the top three for the women at 22:43, with Bree Wee just a second behind in fourth at 22:44.
Hoyt Thomas (22:52) placed seventh overall and second for the men. Mark Noetzel finished third (22:54), and Buddy Rose was fourth (22:56).

The Hapuna Roughwater Swim is scheduled for 8 a.m. June 29 at Hapuna Beach Park at 8 a.m. The King’s Swim will take place at 8 a.m. July 6 near Kailua Pier.
The Hawaii Cycling Club will host its Upolu Airport Training Time Trial at 8 a.m. Saturday. The course will start from the corner of Highway 270 and Maluokalani Street in Kawaihae. Cyclists will begin by riding north for 16 miles on Highway 270 to the Upolu Airport sign just before the turnoff for the airport.
Registration for this free community event will take place from 7 to 7:40 a.m. on Maluokalani Street (there will be a sign to direct you from the main road). A mandatory prerace meeting will take place at 7:50 a.m. This is an individual time trial (drafting is not legal in this race), and cyclists will ride in 30-second intervals.
At 8:03 a.m. Hawaiian time on Sunday, Frozen Pea Productions will host its Polar Bear’s Pinto Bean and Pinata Biathlon training race near Kailua Pier. The Polar Bear’s Pinto Bean and Pinata Biathlon will include a 3/4-mile swim and a 3.1-mile run. A shorter course features a 200-yard swim and a one-mile run.
Relays are encouraged and, as always, snorkels, fins, masks and jogging strollers are all welcome on the course.
