Kokua Kailua is Sunday
Kokua Kailua is slated from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday. Alii Drive through Kailua Village becomes a pedestrian-only walkway during these monthly events. Vendors line the road, while shops and eateries are open to be explored. Free entertainment begins at 4 p.m. on the Hulihee Palace lawn.
The next Kokua Kailua is planned June 9.
Afternoon at Hulihee is Sunday
The Daughters of Hawaii and Calabsh Cousins present Afternoon at Hulihee at 4 p.m. Sunday at Hulihee Palace. The event honors the late King Kamehameha IV. The Merrie Monarchs and kumu hula Etua Lopes and his Halau Na Pua Ui O Hawaii will entertain.
Admission is free; donations are welcome. Bring a beach mat or chair as seating is not provided.
Hulihee Palace is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays; 1 to 4 p.m. Mondays following Kokua Kailua events. Palace admission with a self-guided tour is $8; $6 for kamaaina, military and seniors; and $1 for those 18 and younger. Guided tours are available upon request. N. Kohala library to screen Cuba documentary
North Kohala Public Library will screen “The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil” at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba’s economy went into a tailspin. With oil imports cut by more than half — and food by 80 percent — people were desperate. This documentary tells of the hardships and struggles, as well as the community and creativity of the Cuban people during this difficult time. Cubans share how they transitioned from a highly mechanized, industrial agricultural system to one using organic methods of farming and local, urban gardens.

Workshops on food safetly slated
The University of Hawaii at Manoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources will host a series of free food safety workshops for growers on the Big Island. To sign up for the Risk Management Workshop Series, call Didi or Perci at 887-6183 or email mddiaz@hawaii.edu.
The first session will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in the Waimea Civic Center conference room in Waimea. The second will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Aupuni Center conference room in Hilo. The final Big Island session will be on from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m June 13 at the Cooperative Extension Service office in Kainaliu.
The workshop helps fresh produce growers, of all types, learn about good agricultural practices and how to write and implement an effective, farm-specific food safety plan. CTAHR’s Farm GAPs coach, Luisa Castro, will also cover what most third-party audit companies require.
Sunday’s Child announces summer program
Sunday’s Child Foundation’s Summer Splash Adventures is coming to the Big Island July 1, 2, 3 and 5. Children 7 to 16 years who are in foster care or are in need of support may participate. Activities include horseback riding, sailing, kayaking, zip-lining and healing and will take place along the Kohala Coast.
