Hawaii Cycling Club held a training time trial on Saturday in Kawaihae. The race featured part of the Ironman 70.3 Hawaii bike course, which is filled with rolling hills and headwinds. Luckily, the morning only brought a moderate headwind — nothing like it has been in the past few weeks.
Cyclists began every 30 seconds from Maluokalani Street in Kawaihae and followed Highway 270 north for 16 miles to the finish line located just before the turnoff to Upolu Airport.
Luis De La Torre powered across the finish line at a pace of 23.22 mph, finishing first with a time of 41 minutes, 21 seconds. Not far behind, Mike DeCarli claimed second (42:10), and Robert Patey was third (42:20).
In the women’s race, Sylvia Ravaglia zoomed up the hills to claim eighth overall and first for the women. Ravaglia averaged 18.43 mph with a time of 52:05. Allison Alterman took second (55:22), and Pamela Harlow was third (57:18).
Congratulations to all who participated in this month’s HCC training time trial.

The rainy conditions brought some fast times as the athletes were able to push themselves a little harder.
Bree Wee charged into first place with an amazing time of 37:09, beating her closest competitor by more than 5 minutes. Sarah Chang placed second (42:51), and Anita Leao rounded out the top three women with a sixth-overall time of 45:25.
Chandler Nacino finished first for the men and third overall at 43:00. Chris Prater claimed second for the men (43:33), and Mike DeCarli was third (45:11).
