Hilo High’s Vikings edged out the Warriors of Waiakea High School by scoring more “points” during KTA Super Stores’ seventh annual S’port Up! program.
The top five Hawaii Island High School Athletic Programs earning the most funds this year for air travel and sports equipment were Hilo High, which received $9,471; Waiakea, $7,483; Honokaa, $5,808; Kealakehe, $5,108 and Konawaena.
The program is a collaborative effort between KTA Super Stores, Hawaiian Airlines and Sports Line to provide high schools a share of $50,000 toward air travel and sports equipment. The seventh annual program ran from Feb. 27 to April 9.
“This year was the highest amount of points ever earned that gave high schools a greater chance to receive much needed funds for their sports programs,” said Tracey Yamane, marketing manager, KTA Super Stores. “We’d like to thank everyone who helped contribute to make this year another success.”
Each time KTA Super Stores’ shoppers purchased participating products they automatically earned points they could designate to the school of their choice. The more points a school earned, the larger their share of funds for air travel and sports equipment. Customers did not need to make any monetary donations.
Since S’port Up! began in 2007, Hawaii Island high school athletic departments have shared a total of $350,000.
Below is a breakdown of the overall points and monetary funds for each school. Half of the funds go toward travel provided by Hawaiian Airlines the other half for sporting equipment by Sports Line.
