A man is dead and a woman injured after a sedan collided with a utility truck performing maintenance work Wednesday evening on Queen Kaahumanu Highway in Kailua-Kona.
The man, age 45, was the passenger in a four-door sedan driven by a 44-year-old woman and headed northbound on the highway, just north of Palani Road, when she apparently collided with a utility truck that had a man up on its boom performing maintenance work on a light pole about 8:30 p.m., according to the Hawaii Police Department.
Hawaii Fire Department Battalion Chief Steve Loyola said the northbound vehicle apparently drove into the utility truck, which had its stabilizer legs out while performing work. The wreck occurred about 300 yards north of Palani Road, mauka of Eho Street.
At least one of the occupants, both of whom have a local address, in the sedan required extrication from the vehicle, he said. Medics from the Kailua and Keauhou fire stations transported the woman in urgent condition and the man in critical condition to Kona Community Hospital.
Police this morning confirmed the 45-year-old man died from injuries suffered in the crash. His identification was not immediately available.
No others, including the man on the boom, suffered injuries in the crash. Police said the utility truck sustained superficial damage in the crash.
The fatal crash required the closure of northbound lanes on Queen Kaahumanu Highway at its intersection with Palani Road. The road reopened about 4:30 a.m. after Traffic Enforcement Unit officers wrapped up their investigation.
