Maunakea Skies program slated June 21
Professor Gary Davis, director of the Joint Astronomy Centre, will present “Beyond the Visible: Astronomy with JCMT” during a Maunakea Skies program at 7 p.m. June 21 at Imiloa Astronomy Center.
Davis will elaborate on submillimeter observations and their contribution to astronomy. He will explain why astronomers undertake this challenging type of astronomy and the advantages of observing on Mauna Kea. He will discuss what JCMT has achieved over the past three decades and what the future holds for the telescope.
Imiloa planetarium manager Shawn Laatsch will provide observational highlights of the night sky over Hawaii, pointing out prominent constellations and stars visible this time of year.

Look Good, Feel Better registration open
Look Good, Feel Better, a free program that teaches beauty techniques to women who are in active cancer treatment, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at Tutu’s House in the Kamuela Business Center in Waimea. Attendees learn skills to better cope with hair loss and skin and nail changes. Free cosmetic kits are provided to each participant.

Traffic committee meeting Thursday
The Kona Traffic Safety Committee convenes at 5 p.m. Thursday in the Community Halau, Building G, of the West Hawaii Civic Center. The public is invited to attend the monthly meetings to discuss traffic safety issues with county and state officials. Parking is available in the makai lot next to Building G.
Status of women discussed Friday
Hawaii County Committee on the Status of Women meets at 10 a.m. Friday at the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney in Hilo. West Hawaii residents can attend via video conference at the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney, 81-9801 Halekii St., Suite 150, Kealakekua.
Disability rights advocate available
A Hawaii Disability Rights Center advocate will be at the mayor’s conference room at the West Hawaii Civic Center between 9 and 11:30 a.m. Friday. Hawaii Disability Rights Center protects and advocates for human, civil and legal rights of people with disabilities.

AdvoCats meets Saturday morning
AdvoCats will hold a public meeting at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Kona United Methodist Church on Palani Road. AdvoCats is a Hawaii County-endorsed trap-neuter-release organization committed to solving the homeless cat problem in a humane way. Upcoming clinics and events will be discussed. Bring ink cartridges for recycling; community support is needed.
