Free concert slated Friday
Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation and the West Hawaii County Band are offering a free summer concert from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Hale Halawai in Kailua-Kona. Bench seating will be available. Those attending are invited to bring comfortable chairs. This a drug-, tobacco-, alcohol- and litter-free event.

Club offers weekly bridge lessons, games
The Kona Bridge Club provides duplicate bridge lessons for $10 per player beginning at 11 a.m. Mondays at Hualalai Academy’s Bridge Building, 74-4966 Kealakaa St. Lunch and an American Contract Bridge League-sanctioned game are held after the class. Players are divided into sessions according to game experience; a session for beginner bridge players and a session for intermediate players.

Fatherhood celebration slated Saturday
Family Support Hawaii and the Fatherhood Initiative presents the 2013 Celebration of Fatherhood from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Queen Liliuokalani Children’s Center in Kailua-Kona. Hiking club plans Kahuku adventure
The Kona Hiking Club will visit the Kahuku Unit of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on Saturday.
Palm Trail Hike is a 2.6-mile loop that traverses pastureland alongside an ancient cinder cone. Highlights include relics of the ranching era, sections of remnant native forest and volcanic features from the 1868 eruptive fissures.
An additional 2.5-mile forested pit crater hike will be offered if enough four-wheel drive vehicles are available.

Those attending should prepare for variable weather. Wear closed-toe shoes and bring hiking sticks, binoculars, lunch or snack and at least two liters of water per person.
Meet at 9 a.m. at the Kahuku gate, between mile markers 71 and 70, or carpool from Keauhou Shopping Center, across from Longs Drugs. The carpool will leave by 7:45 a.m.; participants are encouraged to contribute toward gasoline costs. For more information, call Kathleen at 557-9246.
Kealakekua library to host Ikebana presentation
Nobuko Humphries will lead a presentation for adults and teenagers on the Moribana style of Ikebana, Japanese flower arranging, at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Kealakekua Public Library. One of the free events planned for the library’s summer reading program, “Dig Into Reading,” Humphries will demonstrate the art and field questions from participants.

Kahaluu cleanup slated Saturday
Kahaluu Bay Education Center’s ReefTeach team will hold a beach cleanup from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Kahaluu Beach Park. Participants will collect litter and cigarette butts. Akaka is Kamehameha parade grand marshal
Sen. Daniel Akaka will serve as grand marshal for the King Kamehameha Day Parade slated from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday in Kailua-Kona. Akaka will be accompanied by members of his family; daughter-in-law, Anna, will lead an equestrian unit as this year’s pa‘u queen. The parade route follows Alii Drive from Royal Kona Resort to the Kailua Pier, then turns up Palani Road.
A hoolaulea begins at 11:45 a.m. at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel and includes a free concert by Hoku Hanohano award-winner Nathan Aweau. For more information, visit konaparade.org.
Camp Tarawa Detachment meeting Saturday
The Marine Corps League Camp Tarawa Detachment meets Saturday at the Parker Ranch Broiler at the Parker Ranch Center in Waimea. A no-host lunch begins at 11:30 a.m., followed by a business meeting at 1 p.m. Serving, retired or reserve Marines and Navy corpsmen and their spouses are invited to attend. Dress is resort casual.

Aloha Quilters of Kona meets at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Wallace Hall at Christ Church Episcopal in Kealakekua. Group members work in both traditional and Hawaiian styles.
