Smith holds off Larson to win Nationwide race
BROOKLYN, Mich. — Points leader Regan Smith won the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Michigan International Speedway on Saturday, holding off Kyle Larson in the final 10 laps.
It was Smith’s second win of the year and 11th top-10 finish in 13 starts. He took the lead with 13 laps remaining when Parker Kligerman had to pit, and although Larson closed the gap a bit toward the end, he wasn’t able to overtake Smith’s No. 7 Chevrolet.
The 125-lap, 250-mile race was run under threatening weather conditions, but drivers were able to finish with no delays. Paul Menard was third, followed by Kyle Busch and Trevor Bayne.
Reds put Broxton
on DL with sore elbow
CINCINNATI — The Reds put right-handed reliever Jonathan Broxton on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a sore pitching elbow, expecting to have him back in two weeks.
Broxton’s elbow bothered him during the week. He had an ultrasound on Friday that found swelling in the elbow. Manager Dusty Baker said the problem doesn’t appear to be serious.
Cubs place OF David DeJesus on DL
NEW YORK — The Chicago Cubs have placed outfielder David DeJesus on the 15-day disabled list after he sprained his right shoulder running into the center-field wall Friday night.
DeJesus was running almost full speed when he extended his right arm, which slammed into the padded wall in right-center at Citi Field. His glove was knocked off his right hand, and DeJesus immediately went down, writhing in pain on the warning track.
Murray, defending champ Cilic in Queen’s Cup final
LONDON — Top-seeded Andy Murray and defending champion Marin Cilic will play in the final at Queen’s Club after both earned three-set victories on Saturday.
Murray, the champion in 2009 and 2011, rallied to defeat fourth-seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in a repeat of their 2011 final. Fifth-seeded Cilic of Croatia held off former four-time winner Lleyton Hewitt 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
Federer beats Haas
to reach Halle final
HALLE, Germany — In a match featuring two men over 30, Roger Federer rallied past defending champion Tommy Haas 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 Saturday to reach the final of the Gerry Weber Open.
Federer will play Mikhail Youzhny in the final today. Youzhny upset second-seeded Richard Gasquet 6-3, 6-2 in less than hour.
Hantuchova, Vekic reach Birmingham final
BIRMINGHAM, England — Croatian teenager Donna Vekic reached her second career WTA final when she beat 2009 champion Magdalena Rybarikova 7-6 (5), 1-6, 6-3 in the Aegon Classic on Saturday.
Today, she’ll face Daniela Hantuchova in the final round of the grass-court tournament. Hantuchova defeated Alison Riske of the United States 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 in the other semifinal.
Garcia stops
Lopez in 4th round
DALLAS — Mikey Garcia stopped Juan Manuel Lopez in the fourth round Saturday night, leaving the WBO featherweight title vacant after Garcia failed to make weight.
Garcia (32-0) weighed in at 128 pounds Friday, two over the featherweight limit. Lopez weighed in at 125 1/2.
Lopez (33-3) would have regained the title with a win.
Garcia put Lopez on the ground with a strong left-handed blow 1:34 into the fourth round. Lopez appeared to be wobbly earlier in the round.
