Tennis great Mako dies in Calif. at 97
LOS ANGELES — Tennis great Gene Mako, who won four major doubles titles and was ranked in the world top 10 during the 1930s, died in Southern California. He was 97 years old.
The International Tennis Hall of Fame said Mako died Friday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. The hospital confirmed his death.

EASTBOURNE, England — Elena Vesnina beat seventh-seeded Ana Ivanovic of Serbia 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 on Monday in the first round of the grass-court Aegon International.
Earlier, 2011 champion Marion Bartoli of France beat Italy’s Flavia Pennetta 6-3, 6-2 to set up a possible second-round meeting with second-seeded Li Na in the Wimbledon warm-up event.
Sixth-seeded Maria Kirilenko of Russia defeated Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia 7-6 (5), 6-1.
Seventh-seeded Andreas Seppi won 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 against French qualifier Guillaume Rufin. Fellow Italian Fabio Fognini, seeded No. 8, rallied to beat Slovenian Grega Zemlja 6-7 (6), 6-2, 6-4.
Sixth-seeded Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov lost 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 to Spain’s Fernando Verdasco, and American qualifier Ryan Harrison edged Paul-Henri Mathieu of France 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (4).

ROSMALEN, Netherlands — John Isner was one of four seeded men’s players to lose in the first round at the rain-interrupted Topshelf Open.
The third-seeded American lost 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-4 to Evgeny Donskoy on Monday. No. 6 Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus, No. 7 Victor Hanescu of Romania and No. 8 Daniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain were also upset.
Donskoy earned breaks against the big-serving Isner early in the second set and again in the final set to advance at the Wimbledon warm-up.
Carlos Berlocq beat Baghdatis 6-2, 6-4. Hanescu lost 6-4, 6-3 to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, and Andrey Kuznetsov beat Gimeno-Traver 7-6 (4), 6-3.
Defending champion David Ferrer, the French Open runner-up, opens play Tuesday against Xavier Malisse.
In the women’s event, second-seeded Dominika Cibulkova beat Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-1, 6-7 (5), 7-6.
Third-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Johanna Larsson, and Lauren Davis of the United States defeated Andrea Hlavackova 6-3, 6-4.
Ex-NFL star Chad Johnson being released from jail
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A contrite Chad Johnson apologized Monday for disrespecting a judge when the former NFL star slapped his attorney on the backside in court last week and was released from jail after only a week instead of 30 days.
Broward County Circuit Judge Kathleen McHugh accepted Johnson’s apology Monday and reduced his jail term from 30 days to seven days. Attorney Adam Swickle said the rear-end slap was just a football player’s way of saying thanks.
The 35-year-old formerly known as Chad Ochocinco was in court because of a probation violation stemming from a domestic altercation he had with his then-wife, TV reality star Evelyn Lozada.
Football Writers honor Colts coach Pagano
INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis coach Chuck Pagano won the George Halas Award from the Professional Football Writers Association for overcoming adversity.
Early in his first season as Colts coach, Pagano was diagnosed with leukemia and took a leave of absence. The team began winning under offensive coordinator Bruce Arians while Pagano underwent treatment for 12 weeks. Pagano worked from his hospital bed on game plans and analyzing practices even as he was recovering from the disease.
After a Week 9 victory against Miami that he attended, Pagano gave an emotional postgame speech to the team. Indianapolis kept on winning and he returned to coach the final regular-season game, a victory over Houston that gave the Colts an 11-5 record.
The team began a CHUCKSTRONG campaign, with proceeds going toward leukemia research.
