Kohala Kamehameha Day Celebration committee meeting
Preparations for the 2014 Kamehameha Day Celebration in North Kohala begin this evening. The committee meets at 6 p.m. at the North Kohala Community Resource Center in Kapaau. The meeting is open to the public. The committee will elect chairmen for subcommittees and other responsibilities.

AARP safe driving course offered
Kona Palisades Association is sponsoring an AARP Driver Safety Class at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Palisades Recreation Center on lower Kaiminani Drive in North Kona.
This refresher class for older drivers covers topics such as slowed reflexes, safety rules, road rage and problems at intersections. There are no written or driving tests. Some automobile insurance providers may offer a discount upon completion.

Lyman Museum hosting speaker, book signing
Between 1865 and 1900 more than 5,000 people afflicted with Hansen’s disease were sent to a remote leprosy settlement on Molokai — 90 percent of them were Kanaka Maoli, Native Hawaiians.
Kerri Inglis, author of “Mai Lepera,” a book which tells the story of this disease, a society’s reaction to it and the consequences of the experience for Hawaii and its people will speak at 7 p.m. Monday at Lyman Museum in Hilo. A book signing will follow. Admission is free to museum members; $3 to nonmembers.

Hawaii Civil Air Patrol receives awards
The Hawaii Wing of the Civil Air Patrol was recently recognized for being the best in the Pacific Region in two areas.
The Mission Award for Excellence and Achievement in the Cadet Programs reflects the work members put in last year to improve the Hawaii Wing Cadet Programs. The Hawaii Wing is now experiencing growth.
The group received the Disaster Relief Award for the third consecutive year. Civil Air Patrol performs public service missions in support of Civil Defense, including the Tsunami Warning Mission, which provides aerial warnings for evacuation in the event of an approaching tsunami as well as aftermath aerial photography of damage.
The Kona CAP Squadron meets at 6 p.m. Tuesdays in the CAP building at the Kona International Airport, across from the air cargo buildings. Visitors are welcome.

Ikeda graduates from basic training
Air Force Airman Deena A. Ikeda recently graduated basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio.
The airman completed an eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.
Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Ikeda earned distinction as an honor graduate.
The airman is the daughter of Debra Arita of Pahoa. She is a 2010 graduate of Hilo High School.
Aiona graduates from basic training
