Civil Air Patrol
meets Tuesdays
The Kona Civil Air Patrol Kona Composite Squadron meets at 6 p.m. Tuesdays for cadets ages 12 to 18, as well as adult senior members. Civil Air Patrol performs emergency services, aerospace education and cadet programs. Meetings are held in its building at Kona International Airport, across from air cargo. Visitors are welcome.

NFB plans car
wash fundraiser
The National Federation of the Blind West Hawaii chapter will hold its annual car wash at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Kailua-Kona Kmart parking lot. The Mokuaikaua Church youth group will help with this fundraiser.
Money raised at the event will support the Sylvia Abernathy Grant Program to assist the blind, or those with low vision, in West Hawaii with training or technology.

DAR meeting Saturday
Daughters of the American Revolution Hawaii Loa chapter meets at 10 a.m. Saturday in Council Chambers, Building A, at the West Hawaii Civic Center. New members will be installed. Continental Congress attendees will speak about their experiences. Summer and fall chapter events will also be discussed.

Tarawa Marines meeting Saturday
The Camp Tarawa Detachment of the Marine Corps League meets Saturday at Banjy’s Paradise Bar & Grill at the Waikoloa Village Golf Course. A no-host lunch begins at 11:30 a.m., followed by a business meeting at 1 p.m. All serving, retired or reserve Marines and Navy vorpsmen and their spouses are invited to attend. Dress is resort casual.

Kona Hiking Club
treks on Mauna Loa
The Kona Hiking Club will hike through Manuka Natural Area Reserve on Mauna Loa to a scenic ocean view Saturday. The hike will be about 6 miles round-trip with an elevation change of about 1,000 feet. Starting elevation is 1,900 feet. The surface is relatively good, but rocky. The hike is moderate with a workout on the uphill return.
Participants should meet at 8:30 a.m. at Manuka State Wayside Park’s parking lot. Driving time is approximately one hour from Kailua-Kona. The group will carpool from Manuka State Wayside Park.
Kona carpoolers can meet at Keauhou Shopping Center on the makai side of Longs Drugs and should park away from the businesses. While there is no charge for carpooling, anyone doing so is encouraged to chip in for gasoline. A hike leader may or may not be present at this location. Be prepared to organize a carpool by 7:15 and leave by 7:30 a.m.
Participants should be prepared for rain, although hot, sunny weather is probable. Hikers should wear closed-toed shoes, carry hiking sticks and bring at least 2 liters of water, snacks or lunch and sunscreen.
