Students in kindergarten through fifth grade, and their families, are invited to learn about the 4-H youth development program from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Kona Cooperative Extension Service office across from the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu. The meeting includes a hands-on activity and snacks.

AAUW plans ‘Welcome Back’ meeting
The American Association of University Women, Kona Branch, will hold a Welcome Back meeting to kick off its 2013-14 schedule of events at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Community Meeting Hale, Building G, at the West Hawaii Civic Center. Julie Steelman will speak and the AAUW video yearbook of 2012-13 will be shown, as an introduction for potential members.
Steelman, an AAUW member, will share photographs from multiple trips to Africa. An avid wildlife photographer and videographer, she is on a quest to picture heaven on earth.
This event is open to the public.

Preservating living history farm discussed
Former Kona Historical Society curator Sheree Chase and interpreters dressed in period costumes will give a free presentation called “History of D. Uchida Kona Coffee Living History Farm: Preserving the Stories of Kona’s Pioneers” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the West Hawaii Civic Center in Building A, Council Chambers.
Chase will describe the development of the farm project over a period of years, followed by a slide show detailing the extensive community and scholarly involvement in the site’s preservation.
This free Hanohano lecture series event is a prelude to Centennial Celebration Day scheduled Oct. 5 at Kona Historical Society’s Kona Coffee Living History Farm in Captain Cook. Along with celebrity chef Sam Choy, who will demonstrate cooking chicken hekka, the daylong event will offer games, entertainment and crafts.
Seniors group
meets Wednesday
The Kailua-Kona Seniors will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hale Halawai in Kailua-Kona. Aging program planner Pauline Fukunaga will share “Chronic Conditions: Self-Management, Better Choices, Better Health.” A question-and-answer period will follow the formal presentation.
