Big Island Babe Ruth Baseball registration for 4 1/2- to 15-year-olds for the 2013-14 season is opening soon.
To be placed on a team you must submit the following items:
c Registration form
c Original birth certificate (for viewing only) and extra photocopy
c Proof of residence — one copy (must show street address)
Registration fees are:
c $55 for tee ball
c $60 for coach pitch (rookie)
c $85 for minors
c $100 for majors
Registration fees include caps and shirts, participation awards (for tee ball, rookie participants).
Families with two or more children will receive a $5 discount per child.
Tee ball and rookie — a $10 late fee will be charged per child for registration between Dec. 1 and Dec. 31.
A $25 late fee will be charged per child for registration between Jan. 1 and Jan 10. No registration forms will be accepted after Jan. 10.

Big Island Running Company offers Couch to 5K program
Big Island Running Company is offering a free training program for novice runners.
The Couch to 5K program begins today at 5 p.m. at the Big Island Running Company’s Alii Drive location.
The nine-week program is aimed at people with no prior running experience. It concludes when members complete the Jingle Bell Beach Run 5K on Dec. 22 at Kailua Pier.

Hawaii Cycling Club offers Lavaman Training
Hawaii Cycling Club is sponsoring the Bypass Training Time Trial Nov. 2. Registration is slated from 7 to 7:40 a.m. The race begins at 8 a.m., following a 7:50 meeting.
The event is free and open to members and nonmembers.
While the bypass is only 2.9 miles long, it reaches 670 feet in elevation and replicates Lavaman Keauhou’s challenging hills.
Registration and a postrace talk story station will be located near the start line.

Gail show features Detroit Tigers executive Zeringue

IKL championships Nov. 2 in Kona
The Kona Branch of the International Karate League will host its ninth annual IKL Karate Championship from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 2 at Kekuaokalani Gymnasium.
IKL branches from Hilo, Paauilo, Honokaa, Waimea, North Kohala, Waikoloa, Captain Cook, Kailua-Kona, Kealakehe, Pahala, Keaau, Oahu and California will attend.
The tournament will feature competition in kata, forms; kumite, sparring; and kobudo, weaponry, for children, teenagers and adults.
The free tournament is open to the public.

KBXtreme host scholarship bowling tournament
KBXtreme will host a bowling tournament Nov. 10 to benefit the Miss Kona Coffee scholarship.
The tournament is open to bowlers of all levels. The format is nine-pin, no-tap singles, 100 percent handicap. A Kona Coffee Festival button is required to participate.
