Nine first-place finishers from the Hawaii finals of the NFL Punt, Pass and Kick contest qualified to participate in the Team Championships on Dec. 2 in San Diego. The group, which includes eight Big Islanders, will compete before the NFL game between the New York Giants and San Diego Chargers at Qualcomm Stadium.
The qualifiers include Jayla Medeiros, a two-time national champion, and former national champion Jason Alani. Both are from Kailua-Kona. Maui’s Laulei Matafa is the lone athlete not from the Big Island.
The youngsters must pay for their trip to the contest in San Diego. If they advance to the nationals, the NFL will pay for their travel arrangements.
The winners Dec. 2 will advance to the PP&K national finals. The annual contest allows youngsters to showcase their skills in punting, passing and kicking with scores based on distance and accuracy.
