Accessible Hawaii, a nonprofit organization, honored Ironman World Championship handcyclists and participants racing with orthotics at a reception Oct. 7 at Mokuaikaua Church.
“It was a night we will always remember,” Australian handcyclist Bill Chaffey said. “My family enjoyed the traditional welcome to the island and Mayor (Billy) Kenoi’s passion for sport and family. Knowing that I can inspire others through my story gives me strength to push through obstacles.”
Kenoi said during the reception he admired the athletes who have the courage and dedication to tackle Ironman.
Fourteen physically challenged athletes raced this year. They came from Austria, the United States, Australia, Germany and Mexico.
