HONOLULU — A Republican lawmaker in Hawaii is saying the state Department of Education is being secretive about its sex education program.

Rep. Bob McDermott is taking issue with the Pono Choices curriculum that’s being developed by the Department of Education. He says it sexualizes the innocent by teaching 11-year-old children about anal sex.

McDermott says he asked the Department of Education to hold a public meeting so people could air their concerns. But he said in a press conference Monday that his letters have gone unanswered.

McDermott says the public does not want the Pono Choices program because it’s too controversial.

The Hawaii Department of Education did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The department had asked the public to weigh in over email by the end of February.
