Hawaii Island police responded around 2 a.m. Thursday to several traffic accidents in Hilo, involving damage to vehicles from striking football-sized rocks on the roadway.
Three of the accidents were on Hawaii Belt Highway, also known as Highway 19, near Alae Cemetery and one was on Haihai Street, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
Police are asking motorists to use caution when driving during the early morning hours, especially with limited visibility because of rain. The public should also report any suspicious activity by calling the department’s nonemergency line at 935-3311.
Those who prefer to remain anonymous may call the islandwide Crime Stoppers number at 961-8300 and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
