Continuing heavy rain in South Hilo, Puna and Kaʻu has prompted the National Weather Service to extend a flash flood warning for the Big Island through 2:30 p.m. Friday.
At 11:12 a.m., gauges in South Hilo, Puna and Kaʻu continued to show very high water levels. While rainfall has tapered off in the areas, stream levels will remain elevated over the next few hours. Highway 11, near Kawa Flats, remains closed because of flooding.
Other locations included in the advisory were Pepeekeo, Papaikou, Pahoa, Mountain View, Laupahoehoe, Keaau, Kapoho, Honomu, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Hawaiian Beaches, Hilo, Pahoa and Glenwood.
A flash flood warning means flash flooding is imminent or occurring in streams, roads and low-lying areas. The public is advised to move to higher ground now.
