Big Island police arrested 20 drivers for allegedly driving under the influence of an intoxicant between Aug. 11 and Sunday. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
So far this year, there have been 746 DUI arrests compared with 789 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.4 percent.
Kona officers arrested eight drivers, South Hilo officers arrested five and Puna officers arrested three. South Kohala officers arrested two motorists. North Hilo and Kaʻu officers arrested one driver in each district.
There have been 980 major accidents so far this year compared with 858 during the same period last year, an increase of 14.2 percent.
So far this year, there have been nine traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with 21 during the same period last year, a decrease of 57.1 percent.
To date, three fatalities were related to drugs and two were related to drugs and alcohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
