Lava flow continues to advance through forest

Lava continued to advance northeast Sunday through the Wao Kele o Puna Forest Reserve, and was about 1.2 miles from a rural neighborhood on the reserve’s eastern boundary, according to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

The lava flow has exited a ground crack at its most distal point and is creating brush fires as it advances through the forest, HVO reported.

The observation was taken Sunday morning.

Hawaii County Civil Defense will host additional community meetings about the flow at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday at Pahoa High School cafeteria.
