Kamehameha (3-1 BIIF, 3-1) had ball-security issues in the first half with four turnovers, but none in the second half. Waiakea spread out its four turnovers, with two in the first quarter and two in the fourth.
On the game’s opening play, Isaiah Mahaulu picked off Kanehailua and returned the ball 54 yards to Kamehameha’s 2-yard line. Waiakea couldn’t move the ball and settled for Tyler Kerr’s 25-yard field goal.
Kamehameha answered on the next series with a six-play, 65-yard scoring drive, capped by Kanehailua’s 9-yard scoring strike to Bayley Manliguis.
In the second quarter, Kanehailua and Manliguis hooked up again with a 24-yard touchdown reception for a 13-3 lead, after the extra-point attempt failed.
Waiakea changed its offense to open the second half with quarterback Gehrig Octavio rolling out and either running or throwing.
The visiting Warriors chewed up nearly seven minutes with a 13-play, 67-yard scoring drive. Robert Aku plowed in from a yard out on third-and-goal to trim Kamehameha’s lead to 13-10.
In the fourth quarter, Kanehailua scrambled away from a hard pass rush, and gave the private-school Warriors a bit of breathing room with a 5-yard TD pass to Alapaki Iaea for a 19-10 advantage.
On the kickoff, Kamehameha recovered an onside kick, but went three-and-out. Then David Kalili intercepted Octavio, and six plays later Batacan scored on a 21-yard run for a 25-10 lead.
Waiakea (1-3, 1-5) got the ball at midfield, and six plays later Octavio rushed in for a 1-yard touchdown, and converted the two-point run.
On the kickoff, Waiakea didn’t kick the ball 10 yards, and the ball rolled out at their 45-yard line. From there, Kamehameha ran 10 plays and advanced the ball to the 14-yard line before turning it over on downs.
Waiakea got the ball back at its 14-yard line, but only 15 seconds remained on the clock.
In the junior varsity it was Waiakea 28, Kamehameha 26.
