Hawaii Island police arrested 27 motorists for allegedly driving under the influence of an intoxicant between Nov. 3 and Sunday. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and two were younger than 21, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
So far this year, there have been 1,002 DUI arrests, compared with 1,130 during the same period in 2013.
South Hilo officers arrested nine motorists while Kona officers arrested seven and Puna officers six. South Kohala officers arrested four drivers and Ka’u officers arrested one.
There have been 1,339 major accidents in 2014, compared with 1,167 during the same period last year.
So far this year, there have been 11 traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island, compared with 23 during the same period in 2013.
To date, three fatalities were related to drugs and three were related to a combination of drugs and alcohol. DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
