Eight applications have been submitted by qualifying organizations and state and county agencies seeking federal reimbursement for protective actions taken or planned in response to the June 27 lava flow ahead of the Dec. 3 deadline.
As of Tuesday, the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Public Assistance Program had received applications for aid from the Hawaii County Department of Water Supply, Hawaii County Civil Defense, Hawaii County Department of Public Works, Hawaii County Department of Environmental Management, State of Hawaii Department of Health, State of Hawaii Department of Transportation, State of Hawaii Department of Education and the Hawaii Academy of Arts and Science, which is a public charters school, said Kelly Hudson, FEMA Region IX external affairs specialist.
The deadline for state, county, and certain private, nonprofit organizations with eligible costs for lava flow to submit applications for the program is Dec. 3, Hudson said. Eligible agencies must submit requests for Public Assistance through the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency within 30 calendar days from the date of the disaster declaration in accordance with Title 44 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Section 206.202(c).
President Barack Obama signed a disaster declaration for the lava flow on Nov. 3.
