HONOLULU — The Hawaii Senate has voted to give Gov. David Ige more time to fill important positions in his cabinet.
The move comes after Ige faced a public backlash for nominating developer Carleton Ching to lead the Department of Land and Natural Resources.
The Senate must approve departmental directors and some deputies nominated by the governor.
But the Senate voted Monday to extend the deadline for Ige to submit nominees from Monday, April 6 to Wednesday, April 8.
Ige withdrew Ching from consideration in March when it became clear that he didn’t have enough Senate votes to win approval. The administration has not yet announced a new candidate for that role.
Ige says he expects to fill the majority of the remaining positions in the next two days.
