Waimea Community Association held at HPA Energy Lab

Sustainability, green initiatives and science and technology student research occurring in Waimea will be the focus of Waimea Community Association’s Town Meeting at 5:15 p.m. Thursday.

The meeting will be co-hosted by Hawaii Preparatory Academy and held at the school’s Energy Lab.

Bill Wiecking, director of the HPA Energy Lab, will be the featured speaker. Attendees can observe student-led projects in fields such as astronomy, remote-controlled drones, computer programming, facial recognition software and brainwave monitoring.

Additional speakers include Noah Dodd on the school’s Zero Waste program and research, and Steven Halsted on robotics.

Also on the agenda will be Hawaii County business updates by Councilwomen Valerie Poindexter and Margaret Wille and by community policing officer Denise Smith-Erickson and Fire Capt. Sundie Aribal. Also, Alan Nakagawa, who is the STEM specialist for Honokaa Complex schools, will brief the group on North Hawaii Innovators’ Fair, set for May 9.

Attendees are asked to enter the HPA campus from the more northern or Kohala gate and follow the signs to the parking area near Gates Performing Arts Center. Attendees can walk to the Energy Lab or ride in a van shuttle.

There is no charge, but donations are accepted and attendees are encouraged to contribute to the Waimea food pantry with cash, check or nonperishable, not-expired food items.
