PAIA (AP) — Maui police say they arrested a man for stealing a $57,000 backhoe while he was washing the stolen equipment.
Police say the John Deere backhoe was stolen Monday morning from a cane field on Hawaiian Commercial and Sugar property in Paia.
A GPS tracking device on the machine led officers to Haiku, where they found Devin Fulcher washing it.
Fulcher was arrested, charged with taking the machine and released after posting $1,000 bail.
Fulcher couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
Robert Fulcher says he’s the 28-year-old’s father. He says he hadn’t heard about the arrest and doesn’t know where his son is.
HC&S General Manager Rick Volner says in a statement the company appreciates police’s quick action in recovering the backhoe.
