A man was arrested on nine counts after people in Kailua-Kona called police on his SUV that had been idling for two hours.
Derek Conway, 39, of Waikoloa, was parked in the lot of a business on Henry Street with his engine running Friday, according to Hawaii Police Department.
Police said he was slumped over the driver’s seat when they arrived after the 8 p.m. call. When they woke him, police said he seemed to be under the influence of an intoxicant and officers saw paraphernalia of intravenous drug use in the vehicle.
Detectives searched the SUV and found 40.7 grams of suspected heroin, 2.8 grams of suspected methamphetamine, 26 diverted pharmaceutical pills, a switchblade and $4,457.
He was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, first-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, four counts of third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, and one count each of fourth-degree promotion of a harmful drug, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possessing a switchblade.
His bail was set at $112,000. He was released from custody Sunday after posting bond.
