A high surf advisory has been extended effect for east-facing shores of the Big Island through 6 p.m. Sunday.
Wave heights of 5 to 8 feet are forecast along east-facing shores of the island’s northern, eastern and southern coasts, the National Weather Service said. The surf is being fueled by east-northeast trade winds.
The service categorized the surf impact as “moderate,” reminding the public to expect strong breaking waves, shore break and strong longshore and rip currents that can make swimming dangerous. Beachgoers, swimmers and surfers should heed all advice given by lifeguards.
Boaters should also be on the lookout for surfers and bodyboarders using harbor channels to access surfing areas.
