An additional six cases of dengue fever have been confirmed bringing the total case count to 176, state health officials said Wednesday.
Of the cases, 158 are Hawaii Island residents and 18 are visitors, according to the Department of Health. Thirty-six of the cases have been among children.
All but eight cases, which saw illness onset Dec. 13-17, have been deemed no longer infectious to mosquitoes. Dengue fever is a viral illness spread through the bite of mosquitoes.
Since the end of October, when state health officials first said they were investigating two possible cases of the virus, 687 suspect cases have been excluded based on test results and/or not meeting case criteria.
