Big Island Brewhaus named second Blue Zones Project Approved™ restaurant on the island

In a recognition ceremony on Monday in Waimea, restaurant owners Jayne and Tom Kerns were congratulated for successfully completing the pledge that makes Big Island Brewhaus a Blue Zones Project Approved restaurant. This is the second restaurant in North Hawaii to achieve this distinction.

In a recognition ceremony on Monday in Waimea, restaurant owners Jayne and Tom Kerns were congratulated for successfully completing the pledge that makes Big Island Brewhaus a Blue Zones Project Approved restaurant. This is the second restaurant in North Hawaii to achieve this distinction.

Several menu options were modified, making it easier for customers to make a healthy choice. The approved dishes are now highlighted with a Blue Zones symbol on the menu.

“We wanted Big Island Brewhaus to become Blue Zones Project Approved because so many of the Blue Zones ideals — eating locally grown foods, making time for family and friends, and relaxation — are directly in line with our goals,” said Jayne Kerns, co-owner of Big Island Brewhaus along with her husband, Tom. “If our little community gathering place can help make our community, our ohana and ourselves healthier, why wouldn’t we make the effort to do this?”

Big Island Brewhaus sources foods and produce from local farms such as Kekela Farms, Mamane Bakery, Big Island Bees and Tropical Dreams Ice Cream, as well as an appetizing keiki menu that offers at least one entree that meets the Blue Zones Healthy Dish Guidelines.
